        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           APRIL 21, 2003

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Commemorating July 27, 2003, as the 50th anniversary of the
     2     signing of the Korean War Armistice and urging the Governor
     3     to direct that American flags be flown at half-staff on July
     4     27, 2003, and urging all government agencies and citizens to
     5     participate in ceremonies in honor of those Americans who
     6     fought and died in service to the United States in the Korean
     7     War.

     8     WHEREAS, On June 25, 1950, North Korea invaded South Korea,
     9  initiating the Korean War; and
    10     WHEREAS, On June 27, 1950, President Harry S. Truman deployed
    11  the 7th Fleet to waters off Taiwan to prevent the spread of the
    12  conflict in Korea to other Far East waters; and

     1     WHEREAS, The United States led an international coalition of
     2  22 countries against Communist forces; and
     3     WHEREAS, More than 5.7 million Americans served in the armed
     4  forces during the Korean War, including 350,000 Pennsylvanians;
     5  and
     6     WHEREAS, More than 103,000 Americans were wounded in the
     7  Korean War; and
     8     WHEREAS, The Korean War cost the lives of 36,916 Americans,
     9  including 2,333 Pennsylvanians; and
    10     WHEREAS, Korean War veterans missing in action include 8,177
    11  Americans; and
    12     WHEREAS, On July 27, 1953, an armistice was signed in
    13  Panmunjom, Korea; and
    14     WHEREAS, July 27, 2003, is the 50th anniversary of the
    15  signing of the Korean War armistice; and
    16     WHEREAS, It is appropriate to remember the sacrifice
    17  Americans made in service to their country during the Korean War
    18  and to raise awareness of the "Forgotten War"; therefore be it
    19     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives commemorate July
    20  27, 2003, as the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Korean
    21  War Armistice; and be it further
    22     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives urge the Governor
    23  to direct that the American flags be flown at half-staff and
    24  further urge that all government agencies and citizens of this
    25  Commonwealth participate in ceremonies on July 27, 2003, in
    26  honor of those Americans who fought and died as a result of
    27  their service to the United States in the Korean War; and be it
    28  further
    29     RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be transmitted to
    30  Governor Edward G. Rendell.
