INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, APRIL 6, 2005
A RESOLUTION 1 Honoring the Borough of Lemoyne, Cumberland County, on its 100th 2 anniversary. 3 WHEREAS, Lemoyne is situated on the west bank of the 4 Susquehanna River just opposite the City of Harrisburg; and 5 WHEREAS, Shawnee and Delaware Indians originally inhabited 6 the area; and 7 WHEREAS, The first known settler was William Kelso, who 8 leased a stone dwelling erected by John Harris just south of the 9 railroad bridge around 1724 and operated a ferry in 1769; and 10 WHEREAS, The ferry, the Great Road built in the 1740s, the 11 camelback bridge built in 1817 and the Cumberland Valley 12 Railroad in 1837 combined to establish Lemoyne as a gateway to
1 Harrisburg; and 2 WHEREAS, Bridgeport and Riverton were originally two 3 unincorporated villages separated only by the Cumberland Valley 4 Railroad; and 5 WHEREAS, Bridgeport to the north of the tracks dates to the 6 1830s, and Riverton dates to 1888; and 7 WHEREAS, Mail was handled through the Wormleysburg Post 8 Office for many years; and 9 WHEREAS, By 1869 the residents, numbering approximately 800, 10 applied for their own post office; and 11 WHEREAS, Riverton and Bridgeport post offices in existence 12 elsewhere necessitated a name change, and Dr. J. W. Bowman 13 proposed honoring Charles LeMoyne, a little-known frontier 14 diplomat from the French and Indian War; and 15 WHEREAS, On May 25, 1905, the Borough of Lemoyne, then 16 totaling 125 acres, was incorporated; and 17 WHEREAS, Early in the borough's history the largest employers 18 were the Pennsylvania Steel Company and the Pennsylvania 19 Railroad; and 20 WHEREAS, Laborers and executives found Lemoyne, with its 21 electric streetcars, a convenient place to settle; and 22 WHEREAS, Four dairies produced milk, butter and ice cream; 23 and 24 WHEREAS, A large bakery which opened in 1915 was a pioneer in 25 home delivery of breads, cakes and pies; and 26 WHEREAS, There were many grocery stores, butcher shops and 27 even Whitman's Department Store of 3rd Street and Hummel Avenue; 28 and 29 WHEREAS, The Lemoyne Trust Company and the West Shore Bank of 30 Cumberland County were organized in Lemoyne's early years; and 20050H0221R1495 - 2 -
1 WHEREAS, Lemoyne's former airfield, part of a string of 2 airfields stretching down the Cumberland Valley, supported an 3 early airmail service and prompted visits from the Goodyear 4 Blimp; and 5 WHEREAS, Professional employment filled the void as the rail 6 and steel industries declined, and insurance and medical 7 companies now employ thousands in the area; and 8 WHEREAS, Lemoyne developed a fine park system with Negley 9 Park, Memorial Park, Schell Park and Maple Street Park; and 10 WHEREAS, Two Civil War forts in the Bridgeport area of 11 Lemoyne were placed there to defend Harrisburg; and 12 WHEREAS, Fort Couch, located at 8th Street and Indiana 13 Avenue, was restored with the help of the Lemoyne Civic Club in 14 the 1950s; therefore be it 15 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor the Borough 16 of Lemoyne, Cumberland County, on its 100th anniversary and 17 extend best wishes for another 100 years.
