A RESOLUTION
1 Honoring the memory of the law enforcement officers who gave
2 their lives in the line of duty in this Commonwealth and
3 recognizing the memorial service in their honor in Soldiers'
4 Grove at the State Capitol Complex on May 7, 2007.
5 WHEREAS, Officer Gary Skerski, of the Philadelphia Police
6 Department made the ultimate sacrifice on May 8, 2006; and
7 WHEREAS, Officer Scott Wertz of the Reading Police Department
8 made the ultimate sacrifice on August 6, 2006; and
9 WHEREAS, Officer David Petzold of the Upper Saucon Township
10 Police Department made the ultimate sacrifice on November 9,
1 2006; and
2 WHEREAS, The deaths of these law enforcement officers make a
3 total of 699 officers who, through the year 2006, made the
4 ultimate sacrifice since the beginning of law enforcement within
5 this Commonwealth; and
6 WHEREAS, A Venango County constable who died in April 1825 is
7 believed to be the first officer to have given his life in the
8 line of duty in this Commonwealth; and
9 WHEREAS, "National Police Memorial Day" is held on May 15
10 each year; and
11 WHEREAS, The week containing May 15, is celebrated each year
12 as "National Police Week"; and
13 WHEREAS, On October 1, 1962, Joint Resolution 730 of the 87th
14 Congress of the United States was signed, authorizing the
15 President to proclaim May 15 of each year as "Peace Officers
16 Memorial Day"; and
17 WHEREAS, Twenty-one years passed before the first "National
18 Police Memorial Day" was recognized on May 15, 1982; and
19 WHEREAS, May 15 has continued to be observed annually in
20 memory of those police officers who made the ultimate sacrifice
21 in the line of duty; and
22 WHEREAS, The Pennsylvania State Lodge of the Fraternal Order
23 of Police presents the annual memorial service in this
24 Commonwealth; therefore be it
25 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor the memory
26 of Officer Scott Wertz, Officer Gary Skerski and Officer David
27 Petzold, the law enforcement officers who gave their lives in
28 the line of duty in this Commonwealth in 2006, and recognize the
29 memorial service in their honor in Soldiers' Grove at the State
30 Capitol Complex on May 7, 2007.
