                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Commemorating the 100th anniversary of Harley-Davidson.

     2     WHEREAS, Bill Harley and Art Davidson introduced the first
     3  production Harley-Davidson motorcycle in 1903; and
     4     WHEREAS, Harley-Davidson grew to become the world's largest
     5  motorcycle company in 1920, with nearly 2,000 dealers around the
     6  globe; and
     7     WHEREAS, Even with slumping sales during the Depression,
     8  company officials kept as many employees at work as possible;
     9  and
    10     WHEREAS, Harley-Davidson made a significant contribution to

     1  the Allies' war effort in both World Wars, providing 20,000
     2  motorcycles during World War I and 89,000 during World War II;
     3  and
     4     WHEREAS, In 1973 all assembly operations moved to the York,
     5  Pennsylvania, facility, which employs more than 3,000 people and
     6  is Harley-Davidson's largest manufacturing plant; and
     7     WHEREAS, Harley-Davidson survived many tumultuous years,
     8  finally being purchased by a group of 13 of its own executives
     9  in 1981; and
    10     WHEREAS, The company effected an amazing turnaround,
    11  producing 30,000 motorcycles in 1983 and more than 65,000
    12  motorcycles in 1991; and
    13     WHEREAS, Harley-Davidson has continued its success, posting
    14  17 consecutive years of record growth and profits and shipping
    15  more than 234,000 motorcycles in 2001; and
    16     WHEREAS, The company has recently announced its intention to
    17  invest $145 million in a new manufacturing plant in York,
    18  Pennsylvania; therefore be it
    19     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives commemorate the
    20  100th anniversary of Harley-Davidson and congratulate the
    21  company on its outstanding achievements throughout the years.
