        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           JUNE 5, 2001

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Honoring the memory of Perry Como, husband, father and American
     2     music icon.

     3     WHEREAS, Perry Como, a beloved vocalist and recording artist
     4  passed away May 12, 2001, at 88 years of age; and
     5     WHEREAS, Born Pierino Roland Como on May 18, 1912, in
     6  Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, Mr. Como was one of the country's most
     7  popular entertainers of the post-World War II era; and
     8     WHEREAS, Mr. Como personified the American dream, rising from
     9  the child of immigrants to become a legendary baritone crooner
    10  and an indelible part of popular culture; and
    11     WHEREAS, A former Canonsburg barber, Mr. Como displayed his
    12  musical talent in his own CBS radio show and helped pioneer


     1  variety shows in the new medium of television in the 1950s; and
     2     WHEREAS, Mr. Como received numerous Emmy Awards plus a Grammy
     3  Award for "Catch a Falling Star" in 1958, was an honoree of the
     4  Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts for lifetime achievement
     5  in the arts and was inducted into the Academy of Television Arts
     6  and Sciences Hall of Fame in 1990; and
     7     WHEREAS, Mr. Como will long be remembered for his smooth and
     8  flowing musical style; therefore be it
     9     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives note with great
    10  sadness the passing of Perry Como and recognize his musical
    11  legacy and lifetime achievements; and be it further
    12     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives express its
    13  heartfelt condolences to the family of Perry Como.
