                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Congratulating the United Mine Workers of America on their 100th
     2     Anniversary.

     3     WHEREAS, On January 25, 1890, delegates from two competing
     4  labor organizations, the National Progressive Union of Miners
     5  and Mine Laborers and the Knights of Labor National Trade
     6  Assembly No. 135, met in Columbus, Ohio to set aside their
     7  differences to merge, forming the United Mine Workers of
     8  America; and
     9     WHEREAS, The first of more than 700 United Mine Workers of
    10  America locals was formed in Shamokin in 1892; and
    11     WHEREAS, The United Mine Workers of America has fought and
    12  continues to fight to correct deplorable conditions in the mines
    13  and to gain for its rank and file a measure of human dignity and
    14  a better life for miners' families and communities; therefore be
    15  it
    16     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the


     1  Commonwealth of Pennsylvania extend its congratulations and best
     2  wishes to the United Mine Workers of America on the celebration
     3  of their 100th Anniversary; and be it further
     4     RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to
     5  Richard Trumka, President of the United Mine Workers of America,
     6  900 15th Street, NW., Washington, D.C., 20005.
