        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           OCTOBER 4, 1999

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating October 1999 as "Arts and Humanities Month" in
     2     Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, Our learning about the literature, music, art,
     4  philosophy and history of other cultures assists in demolishing
     5  the barriers and easing the divisions that alienate us from
     6  others; and
     7     WHEREAS, An understanding of the arts and humanities promotes
     8  an understanding of the innovations that have shaped this
     9  Commonwealth and our nation; and
    10     WHEREAS, The arts and humanities exist to accentuate our
    11  understanding of our nation's past and present as well as to
    12  provide a blueprint for our society as we venture toward the new
    13  millennium; and


     1     WHEREAS, Through arts education we preserve our heritage for
     2  our children; and
     3     WHEREAS, Arts education fosters creativity, sensitivity,
     4  discipline and a connectedness necessary for success in life;
     5  and
     6     WHEREAS, The arts and humanities touch all aspects of our
     7  lives, including the ways in which we as individuals and as a
     8  society participate in education, business, worship and solve
     9  the problems that plague our communities and our lives; and
    10     WHEREAS, A skillful and thoughtful artist helps us find
    11  satisfaction in a world full of frustrations, afflictions and
    12  despair and also reflects our greatest joys and successes;
    13  therefore be it
    14     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives commend all
    15  artists and humanists and recognize their indelible contribution
    16  to our Commonwealth; and be it further
    17     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives declare October
    18  1999 as "Arts and Humanities Month" in Pennsylvania and
    19  encourage all citizens to examine and contribute to the arts and
    20  humanities which have uplifted our society.
