A RESOLUTION 1 Joining in the observance of the Great American Smokeout on 2 November 18, 1999. 3 WHEREAS, It has become common knowledge that cigarette 4 smoking is damaging to health; and 5 WHEREAS, Smoking has been implicated in cancers of the mouth, 6 pharynx, larynx, esophagus, pancreas, cervix, kidney and 7 bladder, and statistics reveal that each day 3,000 teenagers in 8 the United States become regular smokers; and 9 WHEREAS, During the past 23 years, millions of smokers have 10 participated in the American Cancer Society's Great American 11 Smokeout, a day on which smokers give up cigarettes and tobacco 12 products for 24 hours; and 13 WHEREAS, The focus of the Great American Smokeout has evolved 14 from simply helping adults quit smoking to helping children and
1 teenagers understand they should never start smoking in the 2 first place; and 3 WHEREAS, Thousands of these participants were residents of 4 the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania; and 5 WHEREAS, A substantial number of them gave up cigarettes for 6 the day and many went on to give up the habit entirely; and 7 WHEREAS, This demonstration of success suggests that the 8 Great American Smokeout, while lighthearted in approach, has 9 potential for improving the health of the people of this 10 Commonwealth; therefore be it 11 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives join in the 12 observance of the Great American Smokeout on November 18, 1999, 13 and encourage all Pennsylvanians to do likewise.
