| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Recognizing May 3, 2011, as "World Asthma Day 2011" in |
2 | Pennsylvania. |
3 | WHEREAS, "World Asthma Day 2011" will take place on May 3, |
4 | 2011; and |
5 | WHEREAS, "World Asthma Day" is organized by the Global |
6 | Initiative for Asthma (GINA) in collaboration with the |
7 | Pennsylvania Asthma Partnership to raise awareness about asthma |
8 | and improve asthma care throughout the world; and |
9 | WHEREAS, Each year GINA chooses a theme and organizes |
10 | preparation and distribution of "World Asthma Day" materials and |
11 | resources; and |
12 | WHEREAS, "World Asthma Day" activities are organized in each |
13 | country by health care professionals, educators and members of |
14 | the public who want to help reduce the burden of asthma; and |

1 | WHEREAS, The first "World Asthma Day" in 1998 was celebrated |
2 | in more than 35 countries in conjunction with the first world |
3 | asthma meeting held in Barcelona, Spain; and |
4 | WHEREAS, Participation has increased with each "World Asthma |
5 | Day" held since then, and the day has become one of the world's |
6 | most important asthma awareness and education events; and |
7 | WHEREAS, Many Americans are afflicted with asthma, a serious |
8 | chronic lung disease, caused by continual airway inflammation |
9 | punctuated by episodes or attacks of increased inflammation |
10 | often in response to specific triggers; and |
11 | WHEREAS, These attacks, characterized by difficulty in |
12 | breathing, occasionally are extreme and constitute a medical |
13 | emergency; and |
14 | WHEREAS, Over the past two decades, the burden of asthma in |
15 | the United States has greatly increased; and |
16 | WHEREAS, More recent data about asthma-related |
17 | hospitalizations and mortality appear to indicate that asthma |
18 | prevalence has stabilized and improved levels of disease |
19 | management have helped to mitigate asthma's effects; and |
20 | WHEREAS, The Pennsylvania Asthma Partnership is comprised of |
21 | dedicated professionals, consumers, pharmacies, environmental |
22 | groups, nonprofit organizations, respiratory therapists, |
23 | registered nurses, insurance providers, Medicaid providers, |
24 | medical centers, local asthma coalitions, physicians, community |
25 | health centers, a Statewide epidemiologist and State agencies; |
26 | and |
27 | WHEREAS, Partners will work on short-term, medium-term and |
28 | long-term outcomes that, when implemented, can be measured; and |
29 | WHEREAS, The ultimate goal of these efforts is to decrease |
30 | asthma morbidity, mortality and costs and to increase the |

1 | quality of life for those with asthma; and |
2 | WHEREAS, The mission of the Pennsylvania Asthma Partnership |
3 | is to partner collaboratively in the dedication of expertise and |
4 | resources in the ongoing development and implementation of a |
5 | sustainable Statewide asthma plan that expands and improves the |
6 | quality of asthma care and management, education, awareness, |
7 | prevention and surveillance and seeks to eliminate the |
8 | disproportionate burden that asthma places on racial and ethnic |
9 | minorities and low-income residents of this Commonwealth; |
10 | therefore be it |
11 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize May 3, |
12 | 2011, as "World Asthma Day 2011" in Pennsylvania. |
