INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, OCTOBER 6, 1997
A RESOLUTION 1 In tribute to those servicepersons who served valiantly in the 2 Vietnam War and acknowledging and supporting the Moving Wall- 3 Vietnam Veterans Memorial. 4 WHEREAS, The Moving Wall-Vietnam Veterans Memorial is being 5 exhibited in Soldiers' Grove in the Capitol Complex in 6 Harrisburg beginning on October 10, 1997, with ceremonies 7 continuing through October 16, 1997; and 8 WHEREAS, During the Vietnam War, American servicemen and 9 servicewomen served their country with heroic courage and 10 determination under some of the most difficult circumstances 11 ever encountered by American military personnel; and
1 WHEREAS, The Vietnam War was the longest war in our nation's 2 history, with the first reported casualty occurring on July 8, 3 1959, and the last reported casualty on May 15, 1975; and 4 WHEREAS, Over 8.5 million men and women served in the Armed 5 Forces during the Vietnam Era; 303,000 were wounded; 150,000 6 required hospitalization; and 75,000 sustained serious wounds 7 resulting in permanent impairment; and 8 WHEREAS, The original Vietnam Veterans Memorial has become 9 the most-visited monument in Washington, D.C., stirring the more 10 than 2.5 million people that visit per year; and 11 WHEREAS, The Moving Wall is a half-scale replica of the 12 Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., and lists the 13 names of the 58,183 men and women who died or are listed as 14 missing in action from the Vietnam War; and 15 WHEREAS, The Moving Wall, created in 1984, has visited over 16 300 sites around the country to bring the spirit of the original 17 Vietnam Veterans Memorial to the grass roots of our nation; and 18 WHEREAS, Both the original Vietnam Veterans Memorial and the 19 Moving Wall are symbolic of our nation's honor and recognition 20 of the courage, sacrifice and dedication of all the men and 21 women who answered their country's call to duty during the 22 Vietnam War; therefore be it 23 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives pay tribute to 24 the men and women who served valiantly in the Vietnam War and 25 acknowledge and support the Moving Wall, a memorial that brings 26 this emotional event in our nation's past even closer to our 27 Commonwealth; and be it further 28 RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to 29 The Vietnam Veterans of America, Inc., Pennsylvania State 30 Council, Jeffrey R.
