                                     AN ACT

     1  Amending Title 75 (Vehicles) of the Pennsylvania Consolidated
     2     Statutes, further providing for general requirements for
     3     school buses.

     4     The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
     5  hereby enacts as follows:
     6     Section 1.  Section 4552 of Title 75 of the Pennsylvania
     7  Consolidated Statutes is amended by adding a subsection to read:
     8  § 4552.  General requirements for school buses.

    10     (b.4)  Use of seat check reminder device.--Every school bus
    11  shall be equipped with a seat check reminder device of a type
    12  that has been approved by regulation adopted by the department.
    13  The device shall be mounted in the inside rear of the bus and
    14  shall be activated when the vehicle ignition is turned to the
    15  off position. The seat check reminder device is mandated

     1  according to the following schedule:
     2         (1)  School buses may be equipped with and use an
     3     approved seat check reminder device on January 1, 2004.
     4         (2)  Every school bus purchased and manufactured after
     5     January 1, 2004, shall be equipped with an approved seat
     6     check reminder device.
     7         (3)  By September 1, 2004, every school bus shall be
     8     equipped with an approved seat check reminder device.

    10     Section 2.  This act shall take effect in 60 days.
