INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, JULY 30, 2001
A RESOLUTION 1 Endorsing and supporting the mission of the National D-Day 2 Museum and recognizing the dedication of the Pacific Wing of 3 the museum, December 6 through 9, 2001. 4 WHEREAS, The National D-Day Museum opened on June 6, 2000, in 5 New Orleans, Louisiana; and 6 WHEREAS, Through numerous records, films, exhibits and 7 artifacts the National D-Day Museum honors the citizen soldiers 8 of World War II of all branches of military service who made 9 victory possible by their courage, perseverance and sacrifice 10 during the Allied and amphibious invasions in all theaters of 11 the war; and 12 WHEREAS, The National D-Day Museum honors Andrew Jackson 13 Higgins and the Higgins boat, the landing craft designed and
1 built by Higgins Industries, Incorporated, of New Orleans and 2 used in the amphibious invasions of World War II; and 3 WHEREAS, General Dwight David Eisenhower credited Andrew 4 Jackson Higgins and his landing craft as winning the war for the 5 Allies; and 6 WHEREAS, The wing of the National D-Day Museum devoted 7 particularly to the amphibious operations of the Pacific Theater 8 is scheduled to open on December 7, 2001, the 60th anniversary 9 of the Japanese surprise attack on Pearl Harbor; and 10 WHEREAS, The dedication of this wing includes numerous 11 ceremonies, military events, the "Gathering of Eagles" and a 12 parade of military units and equipment, drill teams, bands, 13 color guards and ceremonial units from each branch of the armed 14 services, including a naval visit by ships of the United States 15 Navy, Coast Guard and merchant marine services; and 16 WHEREAS, The National D-Day Museum, with the assistance of 17 the United States Department of Defense and the Department of 18 Veterans Affairs, is attempting to identify and invite to the 19 dedication all living veterans of the D-Days of World War II, 20 particularly those who served in the Pacific Theater; and 21 WHEREAS, The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania supports the 22 efforts of the National D-Day Museum in New Orleans, Louisiana, 23 to honor these veterans; therefore be it 24 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 25 Commonwealth of Pennsylvania endorse and support the mission of 26 the National D-Day Museum in New Orleans, Louisiana, which seeks 27 to recognize the citizen soldiers of World War II on the 28 occasion of the dedication of the Pacific Wing of the museum, 29 December 6 through 9, 2001.
