INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, OCTOBER 19, 1999
A RESOLUTION 1 Designating the month of November 1999 as "Alzheimer's Disease 2 Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania. 3 WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease is a degenerative brain disorder 4 that causes progressive loss of memory and intellectual 5 function; and 6 WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease was first described in 1906 and 7 has been diagnosed in millions of people ever since; and 8 WHEREAS, Approximately 4 million Americans currently suffer 9 from Alzheimer's disease, with this number increasing to nearly 10 14 million by the middle of the 21st century; and
1 WHEREAS, One in ten persons over 65 years of age and almost 2 one-half of persons over 85 years of age have Alzheimer's 3 disease; and 4 WHEREAS, Approximately one-half of all nursing home residents 5 suffer from Alzheimer's disease or a related disorder; and 6 WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease causes severe physical, 7 emotional and financial trauma for affected persons as well as 8 their families and friends; and 9 WHEREAS, Despite the painstaking efforts of researchers and 10 other advocates, medical science has yet to find a cure or 11 treatment for Alzheimer's disease; and 12 WHEREAS, While a cure or treatment for the disease has yet to 13 be found, its tragic effects have spurred scientists and 14 physicians worldwide to intensify their research efforts; and 15 WHEREAS, Until that research is successful, the public must 16 be provided with information about this disorder and ways must 17 be found to ease the burden on patients, families and 18 caregivers; therefore be it 19 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the 20 month of November 1999 as "Alzheimer's Disease Awareness Month" 21 in Pennsylvania and urge all Pennsylvanians to become better 22 informed about the disease and its impact.
