        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           SEPTEMBER 24, 2001

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Recognizing September 22, 2001, as "National Hunting and Fishing
     2     Day."

     3     WHEREAS, Hunting and fishing have always been an important
     4  part of the American tradition. While these activities may no
     5  longer be necessary for survival, as they were in the early days
     6  of this Commonwealth, they are still relevant today; and
     7     WHEREAS, Sportsmen have been in the forefront of the
     8  conservation movement for over one hundred years. Not content
     9  with merely vocalizing their support, hunters and anglers
    10  requested special fees and taxes on their equipment which help


     1  pay for wildlife management and other conservation programs; and
     2     WHEREAS, Sportsman-financed programs have led to the dramatic
     3  comeback of white-tailed deer, elk, antelope, wild turkey and
     4  numerous other wildlife species; and
     5     WHEREAS, Individuals, and through their organizations,
     6  hunters and anglers volunteer countless hours of their time for
     7  local conservation projects and to raise funds for conservation;
     8  and
     9     WHEREAS, The idea of devoting a special day to honor
    10  sportspersons who hunt and fish for their leading role in the
    11  conservation of fish, wildlife and other natural resources
    12  originated with a Pennsylvanian, Ira Joffe of Upper Darby; and
    13     WHEREAS, September 22 marks the 30th anniversary of the first
    14  "National Hunting and Fishing Day"; therefore be it
    15     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize
    16  September 22, 2001, as "National Hunting and Fishing Day"; and
    17  be it further
    18     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives urge all
    19  Pennsylvanians to participate in the activities associated with
    20  "National Hunting and Fishing Day."
