        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           SEPTEMBER 25, 2001

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Recognizing September 11 as "National 911 Day."

     2     WHEREAS, Protecting the lives and property of citizens is one
     3  of government's fundamental responsibilities; and
     4     WHEREAS, In times of emergency, citizens must have a quick
     5  and easy way to summon police and other rescue services; and
     6     WHEREAS, The 911 emergency telephone number fulfills this
     7  need and proves its value hundreds of times every day throughout
     8  our country; and
     9     WHEREAS, In 1968, 911 was designated the universal emergency
    10  telephone number in North America; and
    11     WHEREAS, Thousands of municipalities have established the 911
    12  telephone number system, making it possible to save more lives

     1  and to increase the public's confidence in local emergency
     2  response systems; and
     3     WHEREAS, The 911 system has enabled communities to respond to
     4  a greater number of emergency calls with added efficiency and
     5  lower costs to the public; therefore be it
     6     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize
     7  September 11 as "National 911 Day"; and be it further
     8     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives call upon the
     9  Governor and the people of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to
    10  observe this day with appropriate ceremonies and activities.
