A RESOLUTION
Recognizing January 21 through 27, 2024, as "Data Privacy Week"
in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, The National Cybersecurity Alliance (NCA) started
recognizing "Data Privacy Day" in 2008 to spread awareness of
what online users can do to manage their online data and why it
is important for organizations to respect online data; and
WHEREAS, The NCA expanded "Data Privacy Day" to "Data Privacy
Week" in 2022; and
WHEREAS, Personal online data is collected daily and is able
to be stored indefinitely; and
WHEREAS, The majority of adults in the United States are
concerned about how their online data is being used and do not
understand how their online data is being used; and
WHEREAS, The majority of adults are concerned about online
data privacy for children regarding social media; and
WHEREAS, Seventy-seven percent of adults say they do not

believe social media company leaders will admit to and take
responsibility for data misuse; and
WHEREAS, Nearly 50% of adults are worried about their
personal information being sold without their knowledge or an
individual stealing their identity or personal information; and
WHEREAS, Thirty-four percent of Americans have experienced a
fraudulent charge on their debit or credit cards, their email or
social media accounts taken over by a third party without
permission or another individual attempting to open lines of
credit or apply for loans with their names during the prior
year; and
WHEREAS, Most adults have an unease surrounding artificial
intelligence and believe that their personal information will be
used in a way they are not comfortable with or not as originally
intended; and
WHEREAS, There is a large gap in confidence in protecting
online data privacy between adults who are comfortable using
technology and those adults who are not; and
WHEREAS, Many adults accept online data privacy policies
without actually reading the policies or viewing the policies as
just another document they need to get past to use a service;
and
WHEREAS, A greater number of adults in 2023 do not understand
online data privacy laws as compared to 2019; and
WHEREAS, Seventy-two percent of all adults, regardless of
political leanings, support more government regulation of how
personal online data is being used; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize January
21 through 27, 2024, as "Data Privacy Week" in Pennsylvania.
