A RESOLUTION
Recognizing May 24, 2017, as "Rare Disease Day" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, Nearly 1 in 10 individuals living in this
Commonwealth has a rare disease; and
WHEREAS, According to the National Institutes of Health,
nearly 30 million Americans have rare diseases; and
WHEREAS, A disease is considered rare if it affects fewer
than 200,000 Americans; and
WHEREAS, There are nearly 7,000 rare diseases; and
WHEREAS, Rare diseases tend to be lifelong, but children
comprise approximately two-thirds of affected individuals; and
WHEREAS, "Rare Disease Day" is observed nationwide by
millions of people across the country and by the National
Organization for Rare Disorders to promote special awareness of
rare diseases; and
WHEREAS, Special events and activities are planned in
