INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, SEPTEMBER 26, 2001
A RESOLUTION 1 Designating October 2001 as "Arts and Humanities Month" in 2 Pennsylvania. 3 WHEREAS, Learning about the literature, music, art, 4 philosophy and history of other cultures assists in demolishing 5 the barriers and easing the divisions that alienate us from 6 other people; and 7 WHEREAS, An understanding of the arts and humanities promotes 8 an understanding of the innovations that have shaped this 9 Commonwealth and our nation; and 10 WHEREAS, Arts and humanities accentuate our nation's past and 11 present and provide a blueprint for our society as we venture 12 forth in the second year of the new millennium; and 13 WHEREAS, Arts and humanities education preserves our heritage 14 for our children; and 15 WHEREAS, Arts and humanities education fosters creativity, 16 sensitivity, discipline and a sense of being connected which is 17 necessary for success in life; and
1 WHEREAS, A video has been prepared to commemorate the 2 connection between the arts, the humanities and senior citizens 3 in this Commonwealth; and 4 WHEREAS, The House of Representatives is hosting an event on 5 October 2, 2001, promoting arts and humanities by having the 6 original manuscript of the James Joyce classic, "Ulysses," which 7 belongs to the Philadelphia Rosenbach Museum, displayed in the 8 Capitol Rotunda during the month of October, and students also 9 will benefit through a presentation in the Capitol for fourth 10 and fifth grade students introducing the important document to 11 school children; and 12 WHEREAS, On October 29, 2001, the Delaware Valley Grant 13 Makers will introduce their first annual "Giving Report" which 14 will reveal Pennsylvania's corporate, foundation and individual 15 giving to Pennsylvania's nonprofit organizations; and 16 WHEREAS, Arts and humanities touch all aspects of our lives, 17 including the ways in which we as individuals and as a society 18 participate in education, business and worship and solve 19 problems; and 20 WHEREAS, Skillful and thoughtful artists help us find 21 satisfaction in a world full of frustrations, afflictions and 22 despair and reflect our greatest joys and successes; therefore 23 be it 24 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives commend all 25 artists and humanists and recognize their indelible contribution 26 to our Commonwealth; and be it further 27 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the 28 month of October 2001 as "Arts and Humanities Month" in 29 Pennsylvania and encourage all citizens to examine and 30 participate in the arts and humanities which uplift our society.
