        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           JUNE 4, 2003

                            A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

     1  Memorializing the Secretary of Conservation and Natural
     2     Resources to rename the Multi-Purpose Trail on Presque Isle
     3     as the Karl Boyes Nature Trail.

     4     WHEREAS, The Honorable Karl Boyes was a member of the
     5  Pennsylvania House of Representatives for more than 20 years,
     6  beginning his service in 1981; and
     7     WHEREAS, As a State Representative, Karl Boyes was a champion
     8  of numerous environmental and recreational development projects;
     9  and
    10     WHEREAS, Representative Boyes was instrumental in directing

     1  the combined efforts of State and local governments, local
     2  businesses and citizens to convert a former railroad bed to
     3  become the Multi-Purpose Trail on Presque Isle; and
     4     WHEREAS, In 1984, Representative Boyes secured the initial
     5  grant money to establish the first six miles of the trail; and
     6     WHEREAS, Over the next 14 years, Representative Boyes
     7  spearheaded efforts to make various improvements to the trail;
     8  and
     9     WHEREAS, Representative Boyes' efforts resulted in private
    10  sector donations of bicycles for park ranger patrols on the
    11  trail; and
    12     WHEREAS, Representative Boyes organized the acquisition and
    13  placement of wooden benches along the length of the trail; and
    14     WHEREAS, Through Representative Boyes' efforts, funds were
    15  raised to purchase and erect safety signs along the trail; and
    16     WHEREAS, Without this personal attention, the trail would not
    17  have become a reality; and
    18     WHEREAS, The House of Representatives believes it to be a
    19  fitting and deserving recognition of Representative Boyes if the
    20  current Multi-Purpose Trail would be renamed the Karl Boyes
    21  Nature Trail; therefore be it
    22     RESOLVED (the Senate concurring), That the General Assembly
    23  memorialize the Secretary of Conservation and Natural Resources
    24  to take such steps as necessary to rename the Multi-Purpose
    25  Trail on Presque Isle the Karl Boyes Nature Trail and to place
    26  signs making this designation at appropriate points on the
    27  trail; and be it further
    28     RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be transmitted to
    29  the Governor and the Secretary of Conservation and Natural
    30  Resources.
