        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           JUNE 10, 2003

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating June 8 through 14, 2003, as "School Crossing Guard
     2     Week" in Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, School crossing guards provide an important public
     4  safety service to schools and their students throughout this
     5  Commonwealth; and
     6     WHEREAS, The work done by school crossing guards helps ensure
     7  that the children of this Commonwealth can cross dangerous
     8  intersections or otherwise safely make the trek to and from
     9  school; and
    10     WHEREAS, School districts such as Philadelphia, York,
    11  Lancaster, Harrisburg, Pittsburgh, Allentown, Erie and Chester,

     1  among others, depend on the good services of school crossing
     2  guards to daily assist students; and
     3     WHEREAS, School crossing guards stand at their posts through
     4  rain, sleet, snow, fog and the heat of the day when school is in
     5  session in order to complete their duties; and
     6     WHEREAS, Most school crossing guards do their work out of
     7  love for children and concern for the general well-being of
     8  their communities, accepting great personal risk while
     9  controlling traffic at dangerous intersections or along other
    10  roadways throughout this Commonwealth; and
    11     WHEREAS, The thousands of school crossing guards who serve
    12  our Commonwealth, its schools and students can be described as
    13  heroes, demonstrating concern and commitment for their
    14  neighborhoods in the performance of their duties; and
    15     WHEREAS, Operators of all types of vehicles must be reminded
    16  of the importance of following directions given by school
    17  crossing guards and put safety first when traveling roads
    18  throughout this Commonwealth; therefore be it
    19     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate June 8
    20  through 14, 2003, as "School Crossing Guard Week" in
    21  Pennsylvania to recognize the outstanding service school
    22  crossing guards provide throughout this Commonwealth and the
    23  risk they encounter daily.
