        AS AMENDED, HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, OCTOBER 30, 2001

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Urging the Governor to oversee State participation with and
     2     support of the USS Arizona Memorial Foundation.

     3     WHEREAS, The attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941,
     4  signaled America's entry into World War II; and
     5     WHEREAS, Pennsylvania's men and women served with honor,
     6  courage and valor during this attack; and
     7     WHEREAS, Approximately 2,400 soldiers, sailors, Marines and
     8  civilians were killed in the attack at Pearl Harbor; and
     9     WHEREAS, The USS Arizona Memorial was established to honor
    10  the memory of those who gave their lives to their country in
    11  defense of freedom during this battle; and


     1     WHEREAS, At least 20 Pennsylvanians made the ultimate
     2  sacrifice in this battle aboard the USS Arizona; and
     3     WHEREAS, Pennsylvania's bond to this battle included the
     4  warships Oklahoma and Utah, both commissioned at the
     5  Philadelphia Naval Yard, and the Commonwealth's namesake, the
     6  battleship USS Pennsylvania; and
     7     WHEREAS, The USS Arizona Memorial Foundation, a nonprofit
     8  organization, is seeking financial support to help expand the
     9  USS Arizona Museum and Visitor Center to include the
    10  participation and sacrifices of all personnel involved in the
    11  December 7, 1941, defense of Pearl Harbor; therefore be it
    12     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives urge the Governor
    13  to engage in negotiations and discussions with the General
    14  Assembly, Pennsylvania's Pearl Harbor survivors and veterans
    15  organizations to determine an appropriate financial contribution
    16  to the USS Arizona Memorial Foundation; and be it further
    17     RESOLVED, THAT EACH YEAR THE GOVERNOR SEND THE FLAG OF THE     <--
    18  COMMONWEALTH OF PENNSYLVANIA TO THE USS ARIZONA MEMORIAL TO BE
    19  FLOWN AT THAT SACRED SITE; AND BE IT FURTHER
    20     RESOLVED, That the Governor, the Department of Military and
    21  Veterans Affairs, the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum
    22  Commission and other State agencies cooperate and coordinate
    23  with the USS Arizona Memorial Foundation to recognize and
    24  chronicle Pennsylvania's contribution to this defense of
    25  liberty.
