INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, JUNE 3, 2005
A RESOLUTION 1 Commemorating the 230th birthday of the United States Army on 2 June 14, 2005. 3 WHEREAS, June 14, 2005, will mark the 230th birthday of the 4 United States Army; and 5 WHEREAS, Our nation's army was born in 1775 when the Second 6 Continental Congress authorized the enlistment of ten companies 7 of riflemen from Maryland, Virginia and Pennsylvania and 8 appointed George Washington Commander in Chief; and
1 WHEREAS, These events served as a prelude to the birth of 2 freedom in 1776, when our nation came into existence; and 3 WHEREAS, The United States Army has been a cornerstone of 4 America's freedom, a symbol of military power as well as service 5 to other nations, a leader in communications and technology and 6 a bulwark of patriotism and loyalty to this great nation; and 7 WHEREAS, United States Army personnel have long served 8 courageously and faithfully, achieving critical military 9 victories in far-flung theaters of operation; and 10 WHEREAS, The men and women of the United States Army 11 honorably and selflessly serve this nation in times of peace as 12 well as during periods of war and armed conflict; and 13 WHEREAS, The United States Army guards the rights, liberties 14 and privileges guaranteed by the Constitution of the United 15 States to each and every citizen of our great country and 16 defends the freedom that is the hallmark of this nation; and 17 WHEREAS, Since the birth of the United States Army in 1775, 18 approximately 13 million Pennsylvanians have served in its 19 ranks; and 20 WHEREAS, More than 25,000 Pennsylvanians have given their 21 lives in battle while serving in the United States Army, and 22 approximately 700,000 United States Army veterans currently 23 reside in this Commonwealth; and 24 WHEREAS, The United States Army has undoubtedly proven itself 25 to be the greatest fighting force in the world in the last two 26 and one-quarter centuries; and 27 WHEREAS, In the post 9/11 world, the United States Army is 28 undertaking Operation Enduring Freedom in response to terrorist 29 threats at home and abroad; therefore be it 30 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives commemorate the 20050H0318R2032 - 2 -
