           LEVDANSKY, B. SMITH, GRUCELA, PETRARCA, EACHUS AND ROBERTS,
           FEBRUARY 3, 1999

        REFERRED TO COMMITTEE ON STATE GOVERNMENT, FEBRUARY 3, 1999

                                     AN ACT

     1  Designating the polka as the official dance of Pennsylvania.

     2     WHEREAS, The polka has become an important part of 20th
     3  century American and Pennsylvania culture; and
     4     WHEREAS, The polka is a product of the millions of Eastern
     5  European immigrants that migrated to Pennsylvania; and
     6     WHEREAS, The polka has been a popular dance and form of
     7  cultural expression in Pennsylvania since the 1920's; and
     8     WHEREAS, The Pittsburgh Polka helped inspire Western
     9  Pennsylvania's own Pittsburgh Steelers to win four NFL Super
    10  Bowls in the 1970's; and
    11     WHEREAS, The polka continues to be an important aspect of
    12  Polish-American and other Eastern European cultures; and
    13     WHEREAS, The polka remains a popular dance and entertainment
    14  form among the citizens of this Commonwealth today.
    15     The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
    16  hereby enacts as follows:


     1  Section 1.  Designation.
     2     The polka is hereby proclaimed, selected, designated and
     3  adopted as the official dance of this Commonwealth.
     4  Section 2.  Effective date.
     5     This act shall take effect immediately.
