INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, DECEMBER 8, 1999
A RESOLUTION 1 Recognizing the month of March 2000 as "National Colorectal 2 Cancer Awareness Month." 3 WHEREAS, Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of 4 cancer deaths in the United States; and 5 WHEREAS, It is estimated that in 1999, physicians will have 6 diagnosed 129,400 new cases of colorectal cancer in the United 7 States; and 8 WHEREAS, In 1999 the disease is expected to have killed 9 56,600 individuals in this country; and 10 WHEREAS, Less than 50% of individuals over 50 years of age 11 receive annual screenings for colorectal cancer; and 12 WHEREAS, Adopting a healthy diet at a young age can 13 significantly reduce the risk of developing colorectal cancer; 14 and
1 WHEREAS, March has also been designated as "National 2 Nutrition Awareness Month," and the prevention of colorectal 3 cancer is highly dependent on dietary factors; and 4 WHEREAS, Regular screenings can save large numbers of lives; 5 and 6 WHEREAS, Education can help inform the public of methods of 7 prevention and symptoms of early detection; therefore be it 8 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the 9 month of March 2000 as "National Colorectal Cancer Awareness 10 Month."
