        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           JUNE 7, 2005

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Honoring the 100th anniversary of the Garden Club of Montrose,
     2     the oldest existing garden club in this Commonwealth.

     3     WHEREAS, In May 1905 Caroline P. Morris was inspired to
     4  establish a garden club in the Borough of Montrose, Susquehanna
     5  County; and
     6     WHEREAS, The Garden Club of Montrose has been recognized as
     7  the oldest existing garden club in this Commonwealth since the
     8  disbandment of the Philadelphia Garden Club, founded in 1904 by
     9  Caroline P. Morris's cousin; and
    10     WHEREAS, According to the original bylaws of the Garden Club
    11  of Montrose, "members shall be those who plan, plant or actually
    12  work in their own gardens"; and
    13     WHEREAS, The Garden Club of Montrose has been associated with

     1  the Garden Club Federation of Pennsylvania since 1930 and held
     2  its first flower show in 1934; and
     3     WHEREAS, Past club projects have included lawn fetes to
     4  benefit the library, trees planted in honor of World War I
     5  veterans and yews planted at the Episcopal Church in honor of a
     6  club member; and
     7     WHEREAS, Current projects include maintaining the courthouse
     8  flower beds and the summer hanging baskets downtown, pruning the
     9  gazebo plantings, furnishing flowers for the library desk weekly
    10  in the summer and providing table arrangements for the
    11  Restoration Dinner and the Blueberry Festival; and
    12     WHEREAS, Other events are a plant exchange with complimentary
    13  birthday cake in May, participation in the Fourth of July
    14  parade, an anniversary tree dedication in September and a
    15  holiday gala and flower show in November; and
    16     WHEREAS, Monthly programs, some of which are open to the
    17  public, are held on a variety of topics; and
    18     WHEREAS, The Garden Club of Montrose currently has 43
    19  members, three of whom serve on the State federation board of
    20  directors; and
    21     WHEREAS, Several members have achieved Judge Emeritus, Master
    22  Judge, Life Judge, Landscape Design Consultant or Master
    23  Gardener status; therefore be it
    24     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor the 100th
    25  anniversary of the Garden Club of Montrose, the oldest existing
    26  garden club in this Commonwealth.
