INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, FEBRUARY 10, 1998
A RESOLUTION 1 Honoring the Pennsylvania Lions Beacon Lodge Camp, Inc., on the 2 occasion of its 50th anniversary. 3 WHEREAS, Chartered in 1948, Beacon Lodge originated in 1947 4 when a group of 12 blind people met in the office of the 5 Pennsylvania Federation of the Blind to discuss the need for a 6 summer camp for the blind in this Commonwealth; and 7 WHEREAS, Camp founders secured land near Mt. Union, 8 Huntingdon County, and raised funds before launching an 9 experimental two-week camping program with a group of adults 10 during the summer of 1949; and 11 WHEREAS, A six-week summer camping program followed in 1950, 12 and the program expanded in 1959 when a session for blind 13 children was instituted; and
1 WHEREAS, Beacon Lodge began offering a camping program for 2 children who are deaf or hearing impaired in 1979 and has since 3 1989 incorporated programs for the benefit of children who are 4 physically or mentally challenged; and 5 WHEREAS, In 1994, Beacon Lodge Camp for the Blind became 6 known as Pennsylvania Lions Beacon Lodge Camp, Inc.; and 7 WHEREAS, The Pennsylvania Lions Beacon Lodge Camp, Inc., 8 including its camp staff, volunteers and visitors of all ages, 9 deserves special recognition for its ongoing commitment to the 10 pursuit of enriching recreational and educational experiences 11 and the attainment of personal goals at Beacon Lodge; therefore 12 be it 13 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor the 14 Pennsylvania Lions Beacon Lodge Camp, Inc., for 50 years of 15 notable service to Commonwealth citizens and offer best wishes 16 for continued dedication to its worthy goals.
