A RESOLUTION 1 Proclaiming November 15, 2001, as "America Recycles Day" in 2 Pennsylvania. 3 WHEREAS, Each year, more than 208 million tons of municipal 4 solid waste go into the nation's landfills; and 5 WHEREAS, Each day, the average American generates more than 6 4.3 pounds of waste requiring disposal; and 7 WHEREAS, While many of the nation's communities have reached 8 an overall recycling rate of 25%, much more can be done; and 9 WHEREAS, To focus the nation's attention on the importance of 10 recycling, businesses, industries, State agencies, nonprofit 11 organizations and individuals have joined together to celebrate
1 "America Recycles Day" and are encouraging their employers, 2 staff, customers, members and all citizens to pledge to start or 3 enhance recycling programs and buy recycled products on November 4 15; and 5 WHEREAS, Participating in "America Recycles Day" is one way 6 citizens can help raise awareness about the need to reduce waste 7 by reusing, recycling and buying recycled products; and 8 WHEREAS, Recycling saves millions of dollars in disposal 9 costs, creates jobs and is recognized as an easy way for 10 everyone to help protect the environment by avoiding unnecessary 11 use of important resources; and 12 WHEREAS, State and community leaders need to spread the word 13 about the excellent programs they have established, the growth 14 of markets for recyclables, the importance of buying recycled 15 products, the need to expand the collection of recyclable 16 materials and the benefits of investments in recycling by small 17 and large businesses; therefore be it 18 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives proclaim November 19 15, 2001, as "America Recycles Day" in Pennsylvania.
