A RESOLUTION 1 Congratulating Penn State Head Coach Joe Paterno on reaching his 2 324th Division I-A victory in football. 3 WHEREAS, Coach Paterno became an assistant football coach at 4 Penn State under Head Coach Rip Engle in 1950; and 5 WHEREAS, Coach Paterno married Suzanne Pohland of Latrobe in 6 1962; and 7 WHEREAS, In 1966, 16 years after he planned to go to law 8 school, Joe Paterno was named the 14th head football coach at 9 Penn State; and 10 WHEREAS, Penn State under Coach Paterno has compiled five 11 unbeaten, untied seasons and two national championships; and 12 WHEREAS, Coach Paterno, or Joe Pa as he is affectionately 13 called, has been an assistant coach or head coach at Penn State 14 for 51 years; and 15 WHEREAS, Joe and Sue Paterno have donated $4 million to The 16 Pennsylvania State University through the Paterno Libraries 17 Endowment and for other purposes; and
1 WHEREAS, On October 27, 2001, Penn State came from behind to 2 defeat Ohio State 29-27 to give Coach Paterno his 324th Division 3 I-A victory, passing Alabama's legendary coach Paul "Bear" 4 Bryant to become the all-time leader in Division I-A football 5 victories; therefore be it 6 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives congratulate Joe 7 Paterno on his outstanding accomplishment of winning 324 major 8 college football games and commend his selflessness and 9 generosity to The Pennsylvania State University community.
