INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, JUNE 23, 2005
A RESOLUTION 1 Congratulating the Township of Crescent, Allegheny County, on 2 the 150th anniversary of its founding. 3 WHEREAS, In 1855 the Township of Crescent was established; 4 and 5 WHEREAS, The township was formerly part of Moon Township, one 6 of the first designated townships when Allegheny County was 7 formed in 1788; and 8 WHEREAS, A ferry service created in 1845 to connect the 9 community to Sewickleyville played a vital role transporting 10 passengers, mail and freight across the Ohio River until its 11 closure in 1929; and 12 WHEREAS, The township was home to numerous boatyards where
1 many famous steamboats were built and launched, including the 2 "Buckeye State," which in 1850 broke the speed record going from 3 Cincinnati to Pittsburgh in 43 hours, which record still stands 4 today; and 5 WHEREAS, The township became an important railroad stop, 6 connecting local communities; and 7 WHEREAS, The boundaries of the Township of Crescent, Brodhead 8 Road and the Ohio River brought settlers into the area and 9 served as a gateway to pioneers passing through on their way to 10 new lives in the West; and 11 WHEREAS, The township, comprising 2.3 square miles, has 2,314 12 residents, approximately 1,000 households and many businesses 13 and churches; and 14 WHEREAS, The township is served by a five-person Board of 15 Commerce, a ten-officer police department with one chief and a 16 volunteer fire department; and 17 WHEREAS, On July 16, 2005, the township is celebrating its 18 150th anniversary with an old-fashioned picnic, games, food and 19 entertainment planned by the Sesquicentennial Committee; 20 therefore be it 21 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives congratulate the 22 Township of Crescent, Allegheny County, on the 150th anniversary 23 of its founding.
