A RESOLUTION 1 Recognizing the week of February 14 through 18, 2000, as 2 "National Heart Failure Awareness Week" in Pennsylvania. 3 WHEREAS, Heart failure has reached epidemic proportions; and 4 WHEREAS, More than 5 million Americans have heart failure; 5 and 6 WHEREAS, Nearly 500,000 new cases of heart failure occur 7 annually; and 8 WHEREAS, Heart failure is a chronic and progressive disease 9 of the heart muscle; and 10 WHEREAS, Many risk factors may lead to heart failure; and 11 WHEREAS, Approximately 50% of patients with heart failure 12 have coronary artery disease as a preexisting condition; and 13 WHEREAS, Heart failure is the leading cause of 14 hospitalization for individuals over 65 years of age; and 15 WHEREAS, Less than 50% of patients live five years after 16 their initial diagnosis; and
1 WHEREAS, In recent years, studies have demonstrated that 2 effective drug therapy can relieve symptoms, slow progression of 3 the disease and reduce mortality; and 4 WHEREAS, Early diagnosis is vital to successful treatment; 5 and 6 WHEREAS, the Federal Government recognizes February 14 7 through 18, 2000, as "National Heart Failure Awareness Week"; 8 and 9 WHEREAS, Events are planned in cities across the nation to 10 bring awareness to heart failure; therefore be it 11 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the 12 week of February 14 through 18, 2000, as "National Heart Failure 13 Awareness Week" in Pennsylvania; and be it further 14 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives encourage each 15 Commonwealth citizen to learn more about the symptoms, risk 16 factors and treatments of heart failure.
