        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           JANUARY 4, 2002

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Declaring the month of February 2002 as "American Heart Month"
     2     in Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, Every 33 seconds someone in the United States dies
     4  from cardiovascular disease; and
     5     WHEREAS, Coronary heart disease is the leading cause of death
     6  for Pennsylvanians; and
     7     WHEREAS, Each year since 1984 the number of cardiovascular
     8  disease deaths for females has exceeded the number of
     9  cardiovascular disease deaths for males; and
    10     WHEREAS, More than half of the men and women who die of
    11  cardiovascular disease have had no previous symptoms; and
    12     WHEREAS, Stroke is the leading cause of serious, long-term

     1  disability and the number three cause of death in the United
     2  States; and
     3     WHEREAS, The cost of cardiovascular disease and stroke in the
     4  United States in 2001 is estimated at more than $298 billion;
     5  and
     6     WHEREAS, Compliance with prescription instructions and
     7  medical precautions and directives is important to
     8  cardiovascular health; and
     9     WHEREAS, The American Heart Association is the largest
    10  voluntary nonprofit organization whose mission is to reduce
    11  disability and death from cardiovascular disease and stroke; and
    12     WHEREAS, The American Heart Association is instrumental in
    13  educating the public and promoting cardiovascular disease
    14  research and education; therefore be it
    15     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives declare the month
    16  of February 2002 as "American Heart Month" in Pennsylvania and
    17  encourage all citizens of this Commonwealth to seek education in
    18  prevention, risk factors and symptoms of cardiovascular disease
    19  and stroke.
