INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, JULY 3, 2009  

A RESOLUTION

Congratulating the Honorable Dan Rooney on his appointment as

United States Ambassador to Ireland.

WHEREAS, In March 2009, Pittsburgh Steelers' Chairman Dan

Rooney was nominated by President Barack Obama to serve as

United States Ambassador to Ireland; and

WHEREAS, On Thursday, June 25, 2009, the United States

Senate, by voice vote, confirmed Rooney's nomination to the

post; and

WHEREAS, Rooney is known in the United States and Ireland not

only as the chairman of one of the National Football League's

most successful franchises, but also as a man who has dedicated

his time and energy to many philanthropic endeavors; and

WHEREAS, In 1976, Rooney co-founded the American Ireland

Fund, an organization which to date has raised more than $300

million for peace and education programs in Ireland; and

WHEREAS, Rooney founded the annual prize for Irish Literature

in 1987 and co-founded the Ireland Institute of Pittsburgh in

1989; and

WHEREAS, In 1993, the "Rooney Fellowship" was created to

honor his generosity and charitable works; and

WHEREAS, Rooney will soon relinquish his position as chairman

of the Pittsburgh Steelers, one of the most successful

franchises in National Football League history and winners of a

record six Super Bowls, including Super Bowl XLIII which was won

in February 2009; and

WHEREAS, Rooney's hard work and dedication to the citizens of

both the United States and Ireland make him the ideal choice to

serve as Ambassador to Ireland; therefore be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives congratulate the

Honorable Dan Rooney on his appointment to represent our country

as the United States Ambassador to Ireland and wish him the best

of luck in his new career.
