INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, SEPTEMBER 16, 2003
A RESOLUTION 1 Designating the month of November 2003 as "Pancreatic Cancer 2 Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania. 3 WHEREAS, The good health and well-being of the residents of 4 this Commonwealth are enhanced as a direct result of efforts to 5 spread awareness about pancreatic cancer and increase research 6 into finding better methods of early detection, causes and 7 effective treatments for this disease; and 8 WHEREAS, Pennsylvania, proud home to many fine medical 9 institutions, is pleased to join in recognizing and applauding 10 the valuable role families and advocates of pancreatic cancer 11 victims play in helping our medical community to advance the 12 fight against this disease; and
1 WHEREAS, Pancreatic cancer is the fourth ranked cause of 2 cancer death among men and women in the United States; and 3 WHEREAS, The American Cancer Society estimates that 30,300 4 Americans will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer during 2003; 5 and 6 WHEREAS, An estimated 30,700 Americans will die of pancreatic 7 cancer in 2003; and 8 WHEREAS, Only 4% of pancreatic cancer patients survive five 9 years after diagnosis; and 10 WHEREAS, There is no cure or early detection test for 11 pancreatic cancer; and 12 WHEREAS, The average life expectancy after diagnosis is three 13 to six months; and 14 WHEREAS, Despite the especially lethal nature of pancreatic 15 cancer, the Federal Government invests less money in researching 16 pancreatic cancer than in all leading cancers; and 17 WHEREAS, It is essential that we work together to support 18 efforts to find ways to attack this deadly disease; therefore be 19 it 20 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the 21 month of November 2003 as "Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month" in 22 Pennsylvania.
