        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           SEPTEMBER 23, 2003

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating the week of September 21 through 27, 2003, as "Dog
     2     Week" in Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, We have been endowed with the blessing and benefits
     4  of dogs who serve us as ally, protector, guide, companion and
     5  friend; and
     6     WHEREAS, It is fitting and proper that the people in this
     7  Commonwealth pay tribute to dogs and recognize the
     8  responsibility to provide humane care for our animal friends;
     9  and
    10     WHEREAS, The dog is capable of being trained to guide persons
    11  with disabilities and assumes this responsibility with selfless
    12  dedication; and

     1     WHEREAS, The companionship of a dog teaches children an
     2  appreciation and respect for the animal kingdom; and
     3     WHEREAS, For millions of senior citizens, a dog fills the
     4  void left by departed friends and family; and
     5     WHEREAS, Dogs serve our country in the armed forces and law
     6  enforcement agencies and, with their human companion, endure the
     7  dangers of life-and-death situations; and
     8     WHEREAS, Dogs, including some from this Commonwealth, worked
     9  around the clock after September 11, 2001, to find buried
    10  remains, continuing under the most adverse conditions to offer
    11  closure to families; and
    12     WHEREAS, Dogs provide therapeutic services to many people;
    13  and
    14     WHEREAS, The unquestioning affection of faithful canine
    15  friends and companions has enriched the lives of all who have
    16  ever been dog owners; therefore be it
    17     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the
    18  week of September 21 through 27, 2003, as "Dog Week" in
    19  Pennsylvania.
