INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, MARCH 15, 2000
A RESOLUTION 1 Observing the 50th anniversary of the United States' entry into 2 the Korean War on July 1, 2000. 3 WHEREAS, On June 25, 1950, armies from North Korea crossed 4 over the 38th parallel into South Korea, prompting the United 5 Nations Security Council in a unanimous 9-0 vote to stop North 6 Korean aggression against the people of South Korea; and 7 WHEREAS, The President of the United States, Harry S. Truman, 8 on July 1, 1950, committed United States forces to aid in the 9 expulsion of North Korean forces in order to restore democracy
1 for the people of South Korea; and 2 WHEREAS, The combined efforts of American service people as 3 well as the international coalition of forces involved in the 4 war were able to drive the North Korean armies back across the 5 38th parallel, ensuring freedom for the people of South Korea; 6 and 7 WHEREAS, To this day hostilities have never been resolved 8 between the governments of North Korea and South Korea, and 9 American troops still guard the South Korean border with North 10 Korea; and 11 WHEREAS, Before the cease-fire was signed on July 27, 1953, 12 33,651 American servicemen and women gave their lives in service 13 to their nation and another 7,140 were taken prisoner for the 14 principles of freedom, justice and sovereignty that we hold so 15 dear; therefore be it 16 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives observe the 50th 17 anniversary of the United States' entry into the Korean War on 18 July 1, 2000, and commemorate the men and women who served in 19 the armed forces during the Korean War; and be it further 20 RESOLVED, That these men and women be given the highest 21 praise and heartfelt thanks of this Commonwealth for the 22 dedicated service and sacrifices they made for the United States 23 and for the sake of democracy.
