        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           MARCH 20, 2000

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Honoring Crawford County, Pennsylvania, on the occasion of its
     2     200th anniversary in 2000.

     3     WHEREAS, On March 12, 1800, an act of the General Assembly
     4  disassembled land from four existing counties in this
     5  Commonwealth, Allegheny, Lycoming, Westmoreland and Washington
     6  Counties, and established eight new counties, Armstrong, Beaver,
     7  Butler, Crawford, Erie, Mercer, Warren and Venango Counties; and
     8     WHEREAS, Due to the sparse settlements in northwestern
     9  Pennsylvania at that time, Erie, Mercer, Venango and Warren
    10  Counties were grouped under Crawford County for administrative
    11  and judicial purposes and became separate counties between 1803
    12  and 1819; and

     1     WHEREAS, Crawford County was named to honor the life of
     2  Colonel William Crawford, who was a friend of George Washington
     3  and who, although not born in this Commonwealth, lived near
     4  Connellsville in what is today Fayette County; and
     5     WHEREAS, Colonel Crawford fought in the American Revolution
     6  in the battles of Long Island, Trenton and Princeton; and
     7     WHEREAS, In 1777 Colonel Crawford was sent to Pittsburgh to
     8  defend the western frontier, and in 1789 he led a campaign
     9  against the Indians and British into the Ohio country prior to
    10  being captured, tortured and killed; and
    11     WHEREAS, This year Crawford County celebrates the 200th
    12  anniversary of its establishment; therefore be it
    13     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor Crawford
    14  County, Pennsylvania, on the occasion of its 200th anniversary
    15  in 2000.
