A RESOLUTION 1 Designating October 18, 2005, as "Independent College and 2 University Day" in Pennsylvania. 3 WHEREAS, Pennsylvania has the second largest number of 4 private colleges and universities in the United States; and 5 WHEREAS, Independent colleges and universities in this 6 Commonwealth enroll 250,000 students; and 7 WHEREAS, Independent colleges and universities in this 8 Commonwealth award 51% of baccalaureate degrees awarded 9 Statewide; and 10 WHEREAS, Independent colleges and universities in this 11 Commonwealth award 54% of degrees awarded to minority students
1 Statewide; and 2 WHEREAS, Independent colleges and universities in this 3 Commonwealth award 62% of advanced degrees awarded Statewide; 4 and 5 WHEREAS, Independent colleges and universities in this 6 Commonwealth collectively employ more than 71,000 people, making 7 these institutions the fourth largest private-sector employer 8 Statewide, with a total economic impact of more than $18 9 billion; and 10 WHEREAS, Independent colleges and universities in this 11 Commonwealth enroll more out-of-State students than any other 12 state, attracting more than 19,000 talented young people every 13 year; and 14 WHEREAS, Many of these students stay to work in this 15 Commonwealth upon graduation; and 16 WHEREAS, The presence of a large, healthy sector of 17 independent institutions of higher education results in enormous 18 investment of private dollars for educating our citizens, 19 thereby saving State taxpayers significant expenditures; and 20 WHEREAS, All Pennsylvanians benefit to some degree from the 21 operation of independent colleges and universities throughout 22 this Commonwealth; therefore be it 23 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate October 24 18, 2005, as "Independent College and University Day" in 25 Pennsylvania.
