A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 1 Honoring the United States Military Academy on its 200th 2 anniversary. 3 WHEREAS, On March 16, 1802, President Thomas Jefferson signed 4 legislation which established the United States Military Academy 5 at West Point, New York; and 6 WHEREAS, Civil engineering was an important part of the 7 curriculum of the Academy, and for the first half of the 19th 8 century the construction of the nation's infrastructure was 9 accomplished considerably by Academy graduates; and 10 WHEREAS, Academy graduates have distinguished themselves in 11 all of the nation's wars and have made many contributions to the 12 nation; and 13 WHEREAS, A number of noted Academy graduates were born in 14 Pennsylvania or have significant ties to this Commonwealth,
1 including Major General George Gordon Meade, who commanded one 2 of three Pennsylvania brigades during the Civil War and later 3 became the Commander of the Army of the Potomac, Major General 4 Norman Daniel Cota, Commander of the Pennsylvania 28th Infantry 5 Division during World War II, Major General John Fulton 6 Reynolds, Union Corps Commander killed at the Battle of 7 Gettysburg, General Matthew B. Ridgway, who commanded the 82nd 8 Airborne Division and 18th Airborne Corps during World War II 9 and the United States 8th Army in Korea and became Supreme 10 Commander of the Allied Forces in Europe in 1952, General Henry 11 "Hap" Arnold, Commanding General of the Army Air Force during 12 World War II, who became the first five-star general of the 13 United States Air Force in 1949 by an act of Congress; and 14 WHEREAS, Representative Edward J. Lucyk (1964), Senator 15 Robert D. Robbins (1966) and Representative John R. Pippy (1992) 16 are all Academy graduates; and 17 WHEREAS, The Academy has a long history as one of the 18 nation's great institutions, producing dedicated leaders in all 19 arenas; therefore be it 20 RESOLVED (the Senate concurring), That the General Assembly 21 congratulate the United States Military Academy as it celebrates 22 the 200th anniversary of its founding and honor its outstanding 23 contributions to the nation.
