INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, FEBRUARY 6, 2002
A RESOLUTION 1 Honoring the accomplishments of the Pittsburgh Steelers on the 2 occasion of winning their 15th AFC Central Division title and 3 their victory over the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Divisional 4 Playoff game. 5 WHEREAS, The Pittsburgh Steelers finished the regular season 6 and the inaugural season at Heinz Field with a 13-3 record, 7 which was the second-best in team history; and 8 WHEREAS, The only year Pittsburgh finished with a better 9 record was 1978, when the team finished the regular season 14-2 10 and went on to win their third Super Bowl title; and 11 WHEREAS, The Steelers' offense surpassed 200 yards rushing 12 seven times this season, which was the second-most in team 13 history; and
1 WHEREAS, On January 20, 2002, the Steelers defeated the 2 Baltimore Ravens 27-10 in the AFC Divisional Playoff 3 Championship Game, thereby advancing to the AFC Championship 4 game; and 5 WHEREAS, This was their fourth berth in the AFC Championship 6 game in ten years under Head Coach Bill Cowher; and 7 WHEREAS, This season's play by the Steelers is reminiscent of 8 the Steelers Dynasty which produced seven Central Division 9 championships and four Super Bowls from 1972 to 1980 and brings 10 back memories of the famous Steel Curtain defense and the 11 Immaculate Reception; and 12 WHEREAS, By winning the home-field advantage, the Steelers 13 ensured that AFC playoff games were held in Pittsburgh and 14 therefore guaranteed increased tourism from visiting football 15 fans from across the nation; and 16 WHEREAS, The Steelers' winning football season has united the 17 Pittsburgh community and has boosted the area's economy; and 18 WHEREAS, The Pittsburgh Steelers remind us all of the 19 significance of community spirit and pride; therefore be it 20 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor the players 21 of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Head Coach Bill Cowher and all the 22 members of the Steelers coaching staff on the occasion of 23 winning their 15th AFC Central Division title and their victory 24 over the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Divisional Playoff game.
