        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           APRIL 21, 1998

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Declaring June 1998 as "Leukemia Awareness Month" in
     2     Pennsylvania and urging all citizens of this Commonwealth to
     3     join in its observance.

     4     WHEREAS, In 1998 more than 145,000 Americans will be stricken
     5  with leukemia or one of its related diseases of lymphoma,
     6  Hodgkin's disease and multiple myeloma; and
     7     WHEREAS, Four in every 100,000 children in the United States
     8  between the ages of two and ten years will be diagnosed with
     9  leukemia in 1998 and more children die from this disease than
    10  any other; and

     1     WHEREAS, Leukemia strikes ten times as many adults as
     2  children and is the leading fatal malignant disease in men and
     3  women under 35 years of age; and
     4     WHEREAS, The overall survival rate for leukemia has doubled
     5  in the last 20 years and the effectiveness of recently developed
     6  treatment methods and steady advances in research bring us
     7  closer to finding the probable causes and cures for leukemia and
     8  related cancers; and
     9     WHEREAS, The Leukemia Society of America, a voluntary health
    10  organization, depends solely on the voluntary contributions of
    11  time and money by concerned businesses, groups and individuals;
    12  and
    13     WHEREAS, A primary goal of the Leukemia Society of America is
    14  to promote increased Federal and State funding of biomedical
    15  research; and
    16     WHEREAS, Finding the causes and eventual cures for these
    17  tragic diseases relies on continued funding and research; and
    18     WHEREAS, Past biomedical research is responsible for the most
    19  common form of childhood leukemia to be considered a potentially
    20  curable disease; and
    21     WHEREAS, The Leukemia Society of America, together with
    22  regional and local chapters, is dedicated to improving the
    23  quality of life of patients and their families and provides
    24  annual financial assistance to more than 6,000 patients with
    25  leukemia and other related cancers for expenditures not met by
    26  other sources; and
    27     WHEREAS, The Leukemia Society of America is undertaking a
    28  nationwide campaign to find a cure by 2000; therefore be it
    29     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives declare the month
    30  of June 1998 as "Leukemia Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.
