        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           FEBRUARY 13, 2002

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Recognizing March 2002 as "Women's History Month" and March 8,
     2     2002, as "International Women's Day" in Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, An unbiased look at women's roles in history clearly
     4  shows that thousands of women did not suffer from lack of
     5  courage, commitment or conviction; and
     6     WHEREAS, Since the formation of the American colonies,
     7  thousands of Pennsylvania women have been in the forefront for
     8  the benefit of all generations to come; and
     9     WHEREAS, By telling history in ways to include and appreciate
    10  the accomplishments and stories of women who made a difference,
    11  a treasure chest of historical information can be opened to

     1  benefit all who read it; and
     2     WHEREAS, Dispelling the stereotypes helps to teach people of
     3  all ages that limited roles typically ascribed to women are no
     4  longer acceptable; and
     5     WHEREAS, Women have played integral roles in all aspects of
     6  Pennsylvania and United States history since before the American
     7  Revolution; and
     8     WHEREAS, Women have been elected to represent 32 counties in
     9  Pennsylvania; and
    10     WHEREAS, Twenty-eight women currently serve as members in the
    11  House of Representatives; and
    12     WHEREAS, The women presently serving make up 14% of the House
    13  of Representatives; and
    14     WHEREAS, The women who serve have been recognized nationally,
    15  Statewide and locally for their public service; and
    16     WHEREAS, Leadership, steadfastness and creativity are
    17  embodied in the business and social acumen demonstrated by women
    18  as we have moved along the path of progress into the 21st
    19  century; and
    20     WHEREAS, In 1989 the Congress of the United States declared
    21  the month of March as "National Women's History Month"; and
    22     WHEREAS, Since the turn of the century, March 8 has been
    23  observed as "International Women's Day"; therefore be it
    24     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize March
    25  2002 as "Women's History Month" and March 8, 2002, as
    26  "International Women's Day" in Pennsylvania.
