        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           FEBRUARY 14, 2002

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating March 2002 as "Women's History Month" in
     2     Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, Women of every race, class and ethnic background
     4  have made historic contributions to the growth and strength of
     5  our nation in countless recorded and unrecorded ways; and
     6     WHEREAS, Women have played and continue to play a critical
     7  economic, cultural and social role in every sphere of life of
     8  this Commonwealth by constituting a significant portion of the
     9  labor force working inside and outside of the home; and
    10     WHEREAS, Women were particularly important in the
    11  establishment of early charitable, philanthropic and cultural
    12  institutions in our Commonwealth and across the nation; and
    13     WHEREAS, Women of every race, class and ethnic background


     1  served as early leaders in the forefront of every major
     2  progressive social change movement; and
     3     WHEREAS, Women have been leaders not only in securing their
     4  own rights of suffrage and equal opportunity, but also in the
     5  abolitionist movement, the emancipation movement, the industrial
     6  labor movement, the civil rights movement, the peace movement
     7  and other movements which create a more fair and just society
     8  for all; and
     9     WHEREAS, Despite these contributions, the role of women in
    10  history has been consistently overlooked and undervalued in the
    11  literature, teaching and study of American history; therefore be
    12  it
    13     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate March
    14  2002 as "Women's History Month" in Pennsylvania and encourage
    15  the citizens of this Commonwealth to observe this month with
    16  appropriate programs, ceremonies and activities.
