        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           APRIL 3, 2000

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating July 16, 2000, as "Atomic Veterans Day" in
     2     Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, The health of more than 250,000 veterans and their
     4  children may have been adversely affected as a result of the
     5  United States detonation of nuclear weapons between 1945 and
     6  1962; and
     7     WHEREAS, Some of those veterans are residents of
     8  Pennsylvania; and
     9     WHEREAS, The National Association of Atomic Veterans (NAAV)
    10  seeks to locate and help these veterans and their genetically
    11  affected children in obtaining medical treatment and assistance;
    12  and

     1     WHEREAS, By engaging in a national research and education
     2  effort for atomic veterans, NAAV is promoting early detection of
     3  medical problems and research and documentation of the
     4  connection between radiation exposure and resultant cancer and
     5  other debilitating, degenerative diseases and genetic mutations
     6  in offspring; and
     7     WHEREAS, The 55th anniversary of the first experimental
     8  explosion of an atomic weapon is on July 16, 2000; therefore be
     9  it
    10     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate July
    11  16, 2000, as "Atomic Veterans Day" in Pennsylvania and urge all
    12  those who participated in United States atmospheric nuclear
    13  weapons tests or in the United States occupation of Hiroshima
    14  and Nagasaki following World War II to contact the National
    15  Association of Atomic Veterans, P.O. Box 2558, Ventnor, NJ
    16  08406-0558.
