        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           APRIL 11, 2000

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Honoring the Borough of St. Clair on its 150th anniversary.

     2     WHEREAS, The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is always pleased
     3  to recognize those esteemed communities which contribute to
     4  Pennsylvania's great heritage; and
     5     WHEREAS, Anthracite coal was discovered in St. Clair in 1824,
     6  and St. Clair became one of the principal towns in the southern
     7  anthracite region; and
     8     WHEREAS, St. Clair was the site of the first vertical deep-
     9  shaft mine in the Schuylkill anthracite district; and
    10     WHEREAS, The Philadelphia and Reading Company's St. Clair
    11  railroad yard was the largest railroad yard in the world at the
    12  time of its dedication in 1913; and
    13     WHEREAS, St. Clair has a distinguished standing in the
    14  history of the American labor movement due to the formation of
    15  the Workingmen's Benevolent Association of St. Clair, which was
    16  able to unify a large group of anthracite workers in the
    17  struggle for social change, successfully lobbying for safety

     1  legislation and labor practice changes; and
     2     WHEREAS, St. Clair has a proud history of military support,
     3  sending its sons and daughters to fight in the Civil War,
     4  Spanish-American War, World Wars I and II, Korea and Vietnam;
     5  and
     6     WHEREAS, In April 2000, the Borough of St. Clair celebrates
     7  the 150th anniversary of its incorporation as a borough;
     8  therefore be it
     9     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives congratulate the
    10  Borough of St. Clair as it celebrates the 150th anniversary of
    11  its incorporation and honor the borough for its outstanding
    12  contributions to the history and traditions of this great
    13  Commonwealth.
