A JOINT RESOLUTION
1 Proposing an amendment to the Constitution of the Commonwealth
2 of Pennsylvania, further providing for retirement of
3 justices, judges and justices of the peace.
4 The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
5 hereby resolves as follows:
6 Section 1. The following amendment to the Constitution of
7 Pennsylvania is proposed in accordance with Article XI:
8 That section 16(b) of Article V be amended to read:
9 ARTICLE V
10 THE JUDICIARY
11 § 16. Compensation and retirement of justices, judges and
12 justices of the peace.
13 * * *
14 (b) Justices, judges and justices of the peace shall be
15 retired [upon attaining] on the last day of the calendar year in <--
1 ODD-NUMBERED CALENDAR YEAR FOLLOWING THE DATE ON which they <-- 2 attain the age of 70 years. Former and retired justices, judges 3 and justices of the peace shall receive such compensation as 4 shall be provided by law. No compensation shall be paid to any 5 justice, judge or justice of the peace who is suspended or 6 removed from office under section 18 of this article or under 7 Article VI. 8 * * * 9 Section 2. This proposed amendment shall be submitted by the 10 Secretary of the Commonwealth to the qualified electors of this 11 Commonwealth at the general election next held after the 12 advertising requirements of section 1 of Article XI of the 13 Constitution of Pennsylvania have been satisfied.
