        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           OCTOBER 20, 2003

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Recognizing the existence of and the positive work of the
     2     African American Alumni Council of the University of
     3     Pittsburgh Alumni Association.

     4     WHEREAS, The African American Alumni Council formed in the
     5  1980s and became a recognized division of the University of
     6  Pittsburgh Alumni Association in 1992; and
     7     WHEREAS, Any person of African-American descent who graduated
     8  from or attended the University of Pittsburgh is considered a
     9  member; and
    10     WHEREAS, The mailing list currently includes more than 7,000
    11  names; and
    12     WHEREAS, The African American Alumni Council strives to
    13  achieve the following goals through its work: identify future
    14  minority Board of Trustee members, Alumni Association Board
    15  members and other University of Pittsburgh board members;
    16  encourage minority students to attend the university; maintain a
    17  scholarship fund; increase membership; network with university
    18  staff, undergraduate and graduate minority organizations to

     1  promote diversity; and increase minority participation in
     2  university committees, programs and student mentoring
     3  opportunities; and
     4     WHEREAS, To achieve these goals, the African American Alumni
     5  Council has participated in the Pitt Alumni Recruitment Team
     6  (PART) and the university FOCUS program which promotes retention
     7  of African-American students, has networked with Equipoise, an
     8  association that aids African-American faculty, administrators
     9  and staff, and with student groups providing scholarships to
    10  minority students, has established a newsletter, World Wide Web
    11  site homecoming events and, in 1997, an endowed scholarship fund
    12  which has a current value of $76,000; therefore be it
    13     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the
    14  African American Alumni Council of the University of Pittsburgh
    15  Alumni Association as a vital and positive part of the
    16  University of Pittsburgh and this Commonwealth.
