A RESOLUTION 1 Honoring the American Lung Association on the occasion of its 2 100th anniversary. 3 WHEREAS, More than 454,000 adults and 216,000 children in the 4 Commonwealth of Pennsylvania suffer from asthma, making asthma 5 the leading serious chronic illness among children; and 6 WHEREAS, More than 25 million Americans are currently living 7 with lung disease, the third leading cause of death in the 8 United States; and 9 WHEREAS, The American Lung Association's annual "State of the
1 Air" report showed that half of all Americans live in areas with 2 unhealthy levels of ozone air pollution and awarded no 3 Pennsylvania county an air quality grade greater than a "C," 4 while the vast majority of Pennsylvania counties received 5 failing grades; and 6 WHEREAS, The American Lung Association, originally 7 established in 1904 as the National Association for the Study 8 and Prevention of Tuberculosis, the nation's oldest voluntary 9 health agency was begun to fight a solitary disease but has 10 changed its mission as reflected by its name change; and 11 WHEREAS, Currently the American Lung Association fights to 12 prevent all lung diseases and promote lung health through 13 research, education, community service and advocacy in the hope 14 of eliminating lung disease; and 15 WHEREAS, The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania has greatly 16 benefited from the association's efforts, including the funding 17 of asthma research projects at Thomas Jefferson University in 18 Philadelphia, implementation of programs like Not On Tobacco and 19 Freedom From Smoking designed to prevent children from smoking 20 and to help smokers quit, and sponsorship of pesticide 21 notification legislation to ensure a more healthy environment; 22 therefore be it 23 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor the 24 American Lung Association on the occasion of its 100th 25 anniversary; and be it further 26 RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to 27 the American Lung Association, 61 Broadway, 6th Floor, New York, 28 NY 10006.
