        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           OCTOBER 22, 2007

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating the month of October 2007 as "Mentoring Month" in
     2     Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, Big Brothers Big Sisters of America has been
     4  providing adult support and camaraderie to youth across the
     5  United States for nearly a century; and
     6     WHEREAS, An impact study of Big Brothers Big Sisters of
     7  America shows approximately 25% of all youth and 50% of minority
     8  youth in a single-parent home; and
     9     WHEREAS, Pennsylvania is ranked 26th in the nation for the
    10  number of children living in single-parent families; and
    11     WHEREAS, Research indicates it is uncommon for youth to have
    12  even one significant relationship with an unrelated adult; and
    13     WHEREAS, Mentoring creates meaningful relationships and
    14  positive interactions which address challenges, and it can
    15  improve feelings of self-worth for both the experienced person
    16  and younger person; and
    17     WHEREAS, Youth who participate in the Big Brothers Big


     1  Sisters of America program are less likely to use drugs or
     2  alcohol, perform better in school and develop better
     3  relationships with their families and peers; and
     4     WHEREAS, Thousands of Pennsylvanians generously volunteer
     5  their time to our future leaders as a big brother or big sister
     6  in the program; therefore be it
     7     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate October
     8  2007 as "Mentoring Month" in Pennsylvania; and be it further
     9     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives encourage
    10  citizens to continue to become mentors and help provide valuable
    11  relationships to the youth of this Commonwealth.
