           FLEAGLE, GEIST, GEORGE, GIGLIOTTI, HARHAI, HENNESSEY,
           HERSHEY, HUTCHINSON, ITKIN, JAMES, KENNEY, LAUGHLIN,

        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           JUNE 3, 1998

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Dedicating July 22, 1998, to the recognition of Stephen Vincent
     2     Benet.

     3     WHEREAS, July 22, 1998, marks the centenary of the birth of
     4  Stephen Vincent Benet, novelist, poet, short story writer and
     5  Fountain Hill native; and
     6     WHEREAS, The late Mr. Benet is being honored throughout 1998
     7  by the Stephen Vincent Benet Centennial Committee under the
     8  auspices of Bethlehem's Sun Inn Preservation Association; and
     9     WHEREAS, The Pulitzer Prize-winning epic poem, "John Brown's
    10  Body," established Mr. Benet's reputation; and
    11     WHEREAS, Works such as "The Devil and Daniel Webster,"
    12  "Sobbin' Women" and "Western Star," which won a posthumous
    13  Pulitzer Prize, continued to add to his reputation; and
    14     WHEREAS, Mr. Benet spent his last years writing for the


     1  Office of War Information in the service of the United States at
     2  a time when democracy was threatened by the Axis Powers; and
     3     WHEREAS, In 1943 at the age of 44, Mr. Benet passed away, and
     4  although there was every indication that he had more to offer,
     5  he is still ranked highly on the basis of his published works;
     6  therefore be it
     7     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives commemorate this
     8  extraordinary Pennsylvania author by declaring that July 22,
     9  1998, be dedicated to recognition and appreciation of the birth,
    10  life and achievements of Stephen Vincent Benet.
