A RESOLUTION
Designating October 17, 2024, as "Chuck Tanner Day" in
Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, On July 4, 1928, Charles William "Chuck" Tanner was
born in New Castle; and
WHEREAS, Chuck Tanner was an American professional baseball
player and manager; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Tanner appeared in 396 games in Major League
Baseball between 1955 and 1962 playing for the Milwaukee Braves,
Chicago Cubs, Cleveland Indians and Los Angeles Angels; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Tanner batted .261 with 21 home runs; and
WHEREAS, While with the Braves, Mr. Tanner hit a home run off
the first pitch in his first career at bat; and
WHEREAS, A manager for all or parts of 19 seasons, Mr. Tanner
led the Pittsburgh Pirates to a World Series Championship on
October 17, 1979; and
WHEREAS, In 2006, Mr. Tanner was invited to be a coach in the
2006 All Star game and threw out the ceremonial first pitch; and

WHEREAS, In 2007, the Rotary Club of Pittsburgh began the
Chuck Tanner Baseball Manager of the Year Award which was
awarded to a manager in Major League Baseball; and
WHEREAS, In 2010, a second award was presented for the Chuck
Tanner Collegiate Baseball Manager of the Year and the original
award was renamed the Chuck Tanner Major League Baseball Manager
of the Year Award; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Tanner was known for his unwavering confidence
and infectious optimism; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Tanner died on February 11, 2011, at 82 years of
age in New Castle after a long illness; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate
October 17, 2024, as "Chuck Tanner Day" in Pennsylvania; and be
it further
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize and
celebrate the life and achievements of Chuck Tanner and urge all
Pennsylvanians to join in honoring the legacy of Chuck Tanner
and his contributions to Major League Baseball and the
Pittsburgh Pirates.
